Lost in La Mancha

A movie about a movie which never happened ...

lilm17.jpeg

Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe wanted to make a documentary about a movie.

But ended up with a touching story about a man fighting with windmills - and as always that is in vain and doomed to fail ...

lilm9.jpeg

May I have the great honour and even greater pleasure of introducing to you ...

former Monty Python-member and present-day director

Terry Gilliam !! :-D

lilm13.jpeg

Gilliam wanted to make a movie called "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote"

But money was tight, one of his stars got seriously ill, the Spanish airforce practised war close by (actually threw live bombs ...) and finally it rained / hailed so much valuable equipment got ruined.

lilm1.jpeg

This is the French actor Jean Rochefort who should have played Don Quixote.

lilm4.jpeg

This is the American actor Johnny Depp. Oh, you knew that already ;-)?

He was suppose to play a modern advertising executive who by accident ends up back in time along side Don Quixote.

lilm12.jpeg

The French singer and actor Vanessa Paradis. Common law wife of Johnny Depp and mother of their two children.

She was suppose to play a Spanish lady by the name of Altisdora in the movie.

lilm11.jpeg

Rochefort and Gilliam at the rehearsels before the movie - before everything started to fall apart.

lilm5.jpeg

Don Quixote rides around on his horse a lot.

But poor Rochefort got so ill that he could hardly stand by his own much less ride ...

lilm2.jpeg

This is one of the costume designer´s beautiful drawings.

Don Quixote imagined himself to be an errant medieval knight even though he lived several centuries later.

lilm3.jpeg

Here is another of the drawings.

Must be a warm set of clothes to walk around in in the hot Spanish sun ... :-)

lilm6.jpeg

Don Quixote believes the windmills are other - hostile - knights and wants to fight them.

lilm7.jpeg

The windmills is - of course - quiet oblivious to the knight ...

But he will fight them!

lilm8.jpeg

These three small drawing are part of the story board - a sort of "comic book" which shows everybody interested how the director imagines his movie to look like.

lilm10.jpeg

"Well - here you fight the fish - you´re o.k. with that, right, my friend? Jean fights the windmills - I fight the moneymen and the movie in general - Vanessa fights - lovingly ;-) - with you :-) And you - you take care of this fish here - alright, Johnny?"

lilm14.jpeg

And this horse wouldn´t do what it was suppose to either ...

lilm15.jpeg

Poor Gilliam actually ...

lilm16.jpeg

But he did manage to film something or other :-)

Wonder if he is looking to see if he got the fish from its best side ;-D

After all that tragic comical misery I need to look at the attentive Johnny once more ...

How about you ;-)?
