Balkan is a very wealthy and learned book collector. He collects books about the Devil.
And now he wants Dean Corso to find out if his precious book The Nine Gates of The Kingdom of Shadows is genuine or not.
Corso thinks it is genuine - even the papir sounds kosher, he states.
But others are also very interested in The Nine Gates. Liana Telferīs late husband sold his copy to Balkan and now she shows a flattering interest in Corso in order to get the book back.
Corso is also rather interested in the lady herself - but tries at the same time to stay an honest "book-detective" and will not stage a theft in order to please her and give her back the book.
"Muuuuummy!!!"
People tries to get rid of Corso in several ways. Here a large scaffold is falling down around his ears.
So poor Corso starts to feel a bit frighten and haunted.
And perhaps by more than "mere mortals"
He has to defend him self and shed other peopleīs blood in order to survive.
Not an ordinary working day for Corso - but he tries to get by as best he can while trying too to solve the mystery ...
"HI!! Taxiiii !!!"
While trying to find out why people are trying to kill him and why people are being killed around him, he tries the old ploy:
"Follow that car!"
And he does find out that the old book The Nine Gates is use at a black mass in order to bring the cult members health, wealth and happiness.
Can Corso perhaps get the same?
Does he dare ...
But Corso follows Balkan when he leaves - staking his money on the assumption that the learned book collector knows what it going on.
But here is our hero in trouble.
He has "found his niche" as Balkan tells him with great relish.
How will Corso get out of that?
