War is hard.
Quite ordinary young men has to learn to kill people they have never met and have nothing what so ever against ...  Lerner here has learned the Vietnamise language so he can try and find out for his fellow soldiers what is going on.  This everybody unfortunately understand - soldiers and civilians of all nations ...
"Do as I says or else ...!"  Only one gets killed this day.
But the village gets torched and the population is lead away to a camp where they can´t help the enemy - or themselves ...  Everybody risk getting killed. Friend or foe alike.
